The Western New York Division of Alcott HR is proud to announce the appointment of Donna Varney, SPHR as Human Resources Specialist. She brings to her new role a strong background in all facets of Human Resources, encompassing such areas as employee relations, benefits administration, recruitment and retention, policy design and administration, Workers’ Compensation, regulatory compliance, employee and labor law, and training and development.
Directly prior to joining Alcott HR, Varney served as Human Resources, consultant with UBM, a global publishing/data solutions company, at its offices in Newark, NJ. Her achievements included successfully sourcing and screening candidates for new positions and helping standardize the company’s processes. As a HR consultant, she also assisted other businesses with establishing their HR policies and procedures.
In addition, Varney served as an Assistant Human Resources Director for The Star-Ledger, partnering with the newspaper’s managers on HR strategies and initiatives such as talent acquisition, training, benefits, employee relations and safety. Her role encompassed managing daily HR functions and ongoing training of HR staff. During this period, she also provided HR support for The Star-Ledger’s sister company, the Jersey Journal.
Varney’s professional career in HR began with her position in Human Resources with Apparel Affiliates, Inc. and then as Human Resources Manager for NBO Stores, Inc., where her many achievements resulted in a promotion to Director of Human Resources. Additionally, she has served as a volunteer career coach, assisting individuals with their resume preparation, online job search techniques, interviewing and networking.
Varney holds the designation of Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), a certification awarded by the Human Resource Certification Institute, an organization affiliated with the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). The certification signifies that she possesses the theoretical knowledge and practical experience necessary to pass a rigorous examination demonstrating her high proficiency within the field of human resource management.
Varney holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Relations from Clarion University, and successfully completed a curriculum in Human Resources Professional Development at Fairleigh Dickinson University.
